The Chillin Babes Can Stay Put

Just a quick post to say that the results for the BRCA gene came back NEGATIVE baby!

A massive big fat YAY!!!

This news (although it was scary leading up to the results) came at a good time because this week we will be paying our storage fee for our frozen children.

We are so relieved that I don't have this genetic mutation as it would have meant that we would not be able to use the banked babies we had preserved. The test is 95% accurate so it's safe to say we can plan for a family and I don't have to actively think about those additional surgeries, although another mastectomy could still be in my future. But not in the near one.

Before signing off... I want to acknowledge that this week will mark the one year anniversary of two fantastic moments (YES, a few good things did happen in the midst of cancer chaos last year!)

...The first one being March 5, the day our little guys were harvested and 'conceived' in a glass.

...And the second being March 9, the day we got engaged. (note the aftermath photo-shoot above)

I think I can say that this week could potentially be a good week on the happy memories front, rather than the traumatic ones that often haunt me. Although now come to think of it, I was in a lot of pain and discomfort for about 2 weeks after the egg retrieval, plus I was still recovering from surgery and getting nervous about chemo starting. It was not all fun and games.

Meh. Being in Tofino with Mike and having him propose that day trumps all of that other noise.

  4. Beautiful news for you :)

One question though -- if you'd been BRCA+, why couldn't you have used these embryos?

    1. Thanks Anne :)

Mike and I made the decision that if I was BRCA+ that we wouldn't want to take the 50/50 chance risk of passing the gene on to our children. So we would have explored adoption as our option for having kids and donated the embryos to science.

  7. Ash & Mike - This post got past me until St. Patrick's Day. I slipped behind, but I'm so glad to come back and read such an upbeat message. It's been one big development after another for you throughout the past 15 months. Organizing your wedding should be a piece of cake, comparatively speaking. So glad you two are together on this big ride called life.
